Patriots missing offensive lineman at practice

FOXBOROUGH – The Patriots are getting healthier on their offensive line, but it looks like one contributor might have had a setback.

On Thursday, rookie Sidy Sow wasn’t present at Patriots practice. The fourth-round pick returned to practice on Wednesday after missing last week with a concussion. Sow was still limited on Wednesday, which told us he was in the final stages of the NFL’s concussion protocol.

The fourth step in the protocol is for a player to participate in a non-contact practice. If he doesn’t t have any signs or symptoms of a concussion, the team physician will clear him for a full-contact practice. After that, a player will practice fully and then must be cleared by an independent doctor before playing in a game.

Considering Sow wasn’t at practice on Thursday, it suggests he had a setback in his recovery. The rookie started Week 1 at right guard in place of Michael Onwenu. That happened after Sow practiced at right tackle all training camp. When he returns to the lineup, it’ll be interesting to see if the coaching staff has him stay at guard or help in the revolving tackle situation.

Trent Brown (concussion) was at Thursday’s practice. He too was limited on Wednesday, but his presence in today’s session suggests he’s on his way back to help the Patriots offensive line. The left tackle would be a big boost for the Patriots against a tough New York Jets defensive line.

The Patriots were also missing Marcus Jones (shoulder) on Thursday. After missing the first two practices of the week, it’s looking like Jones won’t be available this weekend against the Jets.

With Jonathan Jones (ankle) still limited) and without Jack Jones (injured reserve), the Patriots are hurting at cornerback. That’s likely why they signed cornerback Breon Borders to the practice squad on Thursday. The team also has Christian Gonzalez, Myles Bryant and Shaun Wade.

The Patriots return to practice on Friday before departing for New Jersey on Saturday.
