Mass. man wanted for shooting ran from officers in Rhode Island, police said

A 29-year-old man from Fall River was arrested on Wednesday after police ran after him in Rhode Island, as he was wanted in connection with a shooting in his hometown on Monday evening, according to the Fall River Police Department.

At 6:15 p.m. on Sept. 18, a 42-year-old man called the police and said he was shot on the 100 block of Choate Street by a man he thought he knew, whom police now believe to be Mohamadou Kante III, the department said.

The 42-year-old Fall River man was on his way to the hospital for his injury, he told police.

After the department stated it confirmed the identity of the suspect as Kante on Wednesday, local police jurisdictions in Rhode Island, including Middletown and Newport, helped Massachusetts officers arrest Kante.

The 29-year-old man led the officers on a short foot chase in Rhode Island before they got to him, the department said.

He is expected to be returned to Massachusetts and arraigned on a slew of firearm charges, including two of those with assault and battery, firing a gun within 500 feet of a home, a violation with two prior violent or drug crimes and carrying without a license, the department said.
