Stefon Diggs drew plenty of eyes when he arrived in style at the 2025 Met Gala in New York City Monday night.
The New England Patriots wide receiver sported an impressive black suit designed by Bianca Saunders while also wearing a luxurious cape.
But he couldn’t take all the credit for the idea.
“I kinda stole this from James Brown, so I feel like I gotta give him all the credit, and a little bit of Teddy Pendergrass,” Diggs said to BET when asked what inspired his look.”
Brown, “The Godfather of Soul,” boasted his own impressive looks over the years. He was famous for his “cape routine,” in which longtime MC Danny Ray would drape a cape over the singer’s shoulders, usually during performances of “Please, Please, Please.”
The theme for Monday night’s gala was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” Co-chairs for this year’s event included Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. In addition, Lakers star LeBron James was an honorary chair for the event.
This marks the third time Diggs has attended the gala. He first appeared in 2023 as a guest of designer Tommy Hilfiger.
Diggs is the first Patriots star to participate in the Met Gala since Tom Brady attended with his then-wife Gisele Bundchen for multiple years. As a result, Brady was photographed in some wild looks, including his famous black-and-gold tux from 2018 that was described as looking like “like the accountant for a mariachi band.”
The 31-year-old Diggs signed with the Patriots this offseason as a free agent, providing some much-needed star power at wide receiver. A four-time Pro Bowler, Diggs previously played for the Vikings, Bills and Texans.
The veteran receiver is coming off a major knee injury suffered last season. But as Monday night showed, he’s clearly far enough along in his rehab to walk the red carpet without issue.
