Woman killed in Gabriel House fire was ‘brilliant musician’ who toured the world

A 71-year-old woman who was one of 10 people killed when a fire erupted at the Gabriel House assisted living facility in Fall River on July 13 was remembered in her obituary for her musical talent, which took her around the world.

Kim Mackin was a “brilliant musician,” who earned a full-ride scholarship to the Manhattan School of Music, where she studied viola and voice, according to her obituary. After Mackin graduated, she was offered several tours as first chair viola, which took her to Israel, Spain, Mexico City and more.

In the later part of her career as an instrumentalist, Mackin played in the Boston Pops Orchestra and the Les Misérables musical when it came to Boston.

Mackin’s sister in law, Shari, recalled “how sweetly she sang and effortlessly captured an audience with the sonorous sound of her viola.”

“She was truly gifted and is blessed to have heard her play and sing. She is so missed,” the obituary reads.

Services for Mackin are entrusted to Southcoast Funeral Homes.
