A two-alarm fire in Falmouth on Sunday afternoon sent three people to a hospital and killed two dogs who could not escape, the town’s fire department said.
First responders were called to Lakeshore Drive at around 2:30 p.m. Monday for a report of a basement fire. Arriving firefighters reported heavy smoke coming from the structure and noted all the home’s occupants had made it outside, the fire department said in a statement posted to Facebook.
Firefighters entered the basement through a slider entrance in the home’s foundation. Inside, they encountered heavy smoke and fire while trying to find and put out the flames, according to the statement.
Additional firefighters on the first floor determined the floor was compromised in several places, leading to all firefighters being ordered out of the building, the department said. It was at that point firefighters struck a second alarm to bring more help to the scene.
Crews were eventually able to knock down the fire from outside the building. Once the majority of the smoke had cleared, firefighters were able to go back inside and fully extinguish the flames.
Three of the home’s occupants were treated for non-life-threatening fire-related injuries at Falmouth Hospital, and one firefighter was evaluated at the scene for a minor injury. The family’s two dogs were unable to escape the fire and died, the department said.
The fire remains under investigation.
