Water main break near Springfield Plaza leaves Ludlow residents without water

A problem with a water main behind the Big Y at Springfield Plaza left some residents with drops in water pressure on Tuesday, but it left Ludlow residents without water entirely.

The Springfield Fire Department posted at 5:33 p.m. on X, formerly known as Twitter, that they confirmed the water main broke. The areas around Center, Sewall, West and East streets, along with the area around Springfield, were impacted, according to a statement from Ludlow Town Administrator Marc Strange, Police Chief Daniel Valadas and Fire Chief Ryan Pease.

Springfield Fire Chief Drew Piemonte confirmed that information with MassLive and added that the Springfield Water and Sewer Commission is attending to the situation. More information would become available Tuesday night, he said.

Strange, Valadas and Pease said in their statement that residents are asked to be patient during this time and to call Ludlow Central Dispatch only in the event of an emergency.

Emergency notifications were issued to Ludlow residents by the Department of Public Works, the statement read.

For one sports group, it meant no cornhole for the evening. 413 Cornhole let members know on Facebook that a Tuesday night session was canceled due to the water main break.

“Due to a major water main break somewhere in Springfield, many surrounding towns are without water,” the post read. “Due to this, we have to cancel tonight’s session in Ludlow. We look forward to seeing you all next week when the water issue is fixed!”

For more information, or to find out about water use, community members are asked to call the Springfield Water and Sewer Commission at their emergency number, which is 413-310-3501.
