Report: Patriots to host former Saints. Eagles QB for workout

The Patriots have two open spots on their practice squad and plan to bring in a young quarterback to potentially fille one of them.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, New England will host former New Orleans Saints and Philadelphia Eagles QB Ian Book on Wednesday. Book was the third-stringer behind Jalen Hurts and Gardner Minshew, but was recently released in the final round of roster cuts.

The 25-year-old also had a workout with the San Francisco 49ers.

Originally selected by the Saints in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Book made one start as a rookie. He completed 60% of his passes for 135 yards with two interceptions.

The Patriots have Mac Jones and backup Bailey Zappe as their quarterbacks. Zappe was signed to the 53-man roster after Matt Corral — who was claimed off waivers by New England from the Carolina Panthers — was placed on the exempt/left squad list. There aren’t many details surrounding Corral’s absence from the team, but Pats coach Bill Belichick called it a “personal matter” when he spoke to reporters on Monday.

Malik Cunningham — who can play QB and wide receiver — is also on New England’s practice squad.

The Patriots begin their week of practice on Wednesday as they prepare to host the Miami Dolphins on Sunday night.
