Warriors sign former Celtics wing to training camp deal

The Warriors are bringing aboard a familiar face to Celtics fans this preseason. The team announced Monday that they are signing Javonte Green to a deal after waiving three players on camp deals (Donovan Williams, Javan Johnson and Kendrick Davis) to make space on the roster. Anthony Slater of the Athletic was first to report the deal.

Slaer indicates that the contract with Green is a likely path to get Green to play for the Warriors’ G-League affiliate in Santa Cruz. That means Green likely signed an Exhibit 10 deal that includes some guaranteed money up to $75,000 if Green ends up playing 60 days with the Warriors’ G-League team after he is waived.

The 30-year-old athletic wing is coming off of a season with the Bulls plagued by knee issues. He played just 32 games last year due to those woes after establishing himself as a surprise factor in the NBA after playing overseas his first few years after graduating from Radford University.

Green spent the first two NBA seasons of his career with the Celtics after earning a surprise roster spot during training camp in the 2019-20 season. However, he was dealt at the trade deadline as part of a salary dump to get under the luxury tax in February 2021. In that deal, Green was traded with Daniel Theis to Chicago as part of a 3-team swap that landed the Celtics Luke Kornet and Mo Wagner. Green played his way into a bigger role in Chicago over the last two years, averaging 15.8 minutes in 186 career games including 46 starts.

Green also shot a career-high from 3-point range (37.1 percent) last year before his injury, a promising development if he can bounce back from his knee injury. He’ll likely have a chance to prove it if he starts the season in the G-League.
