The Powerball’s massive $1 billion jackpot may still remain at large after Wednesday night’s drawing turned up no winners, but two tickets sold in Massachusetts made for a pretty good consolation prize.
A pair of $1 million winners were sold in the Bay State — one in Medway and the other in Medford, according to the lottery’s website. The Medway ticket was sold at a Cumberland Farms on Milford Street and the Medford winner was sold at a Wegmans on the Mystic Valley Parkway.
The Powerball jackpot soared to $1.23 billion after Wednesday night’s drawing, now the eighth-largest pot in U.S. history, the Associated Press reported. The last time the Powerball jackpot was hit was Jan. 1, when a ticket sold in Michigan won $842.4 million.
In Powerball, players select five numbers between 1 and 69 and one Powerball number between 1 and 26. They then choose how many drawings they want to use those numbers for. Powerball drawings take place every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m.
Players who match all five numbers and the Powerball number win the jackpot, which currently stands at more than $1 billion. They have 1 in 292,201,338 odds of winning that prize.
The two $1 million winners matched all five numbers, but not the Powerball number.
The Massachusetts State Lottery releases a full list of winning tickets every day. The list only includes winning tickets worth more than $600.
So far, the three largest lottery prizes won in Massachusetts in 2024 were all $4 million prizes. One was claimed on Tuesday, Jan. 16, another was claimed on Tuesday, Feb. 27 and the third was claimed on Tuesday, March 19.
Overall, there were more than 570 prizes worth $600 or more won or claimed in Massachusetts on Monday, including 18 in Worcester, 13 in Springfield, and 56 in Boston and its neighborhoods.
Powerball tickets cost $2 each.
