Tackling loneliness in Massachusetts — a public health priority

Loneliness isn’t just an emotional challenge — it’s become an epidemic, quietly impacting individuals and families across Massachusetts, from Boston to the Berkshires.

New national data from The Cigna Group’s Loneliness in America 2025 report shows that 57% of Americans feel lonely. That means more than half the country is struggling with disconnection that can affect emotional well-being, physical health, and community ties. In Massachusetts, 1 in 4 adults 65 and older are socially isolated, according to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM).

As a physician, I see the signs daily in our state. Loneliness impacts new parents balancing work and childcare, as well as older adults navigating life without regular support.
