Police investigating vandalism at State House, ‘suspicious package’ on Boston Common

A person poured white paint on the gate in front of the Massachusetts State House and spray-painted something on it early Wednesday morning, officials said.

Massachusetts State Police responded to a reported vandalism on Beacon Street immediately in front of the State House in downtown Boston around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, an agency spokesman said in an email.

Police subsequently received a report of a suspicious package on Boston Common, which may have been abandoned by the suspect in the vandalism, the spokesman, Tim McGuirk, said.

The agency deployed a bomb squad to investigate the package out of an “abundance of caution,” McGuirk wrote.

“Investigators will continue their work to identify the person(s) responsible,” McGuirk said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact state police at 617-727-6780.
