A warming trend begins Wednesday across Massachusetts, with temperatures climbing to the 80s for much of the Bay State ahead of abnormally high heat arriving later in the week.
Temperatures on Wednesday will be right around normal for late July — in the high 70s to low 80s in the South Coast and on Cape Cod and the Islands, and slightly warmer, around the low to mid 80s elsewhere. Humidity is expected to slowly rise on Wednesday, but it is unlikely to have much impact on heat indices.
But by Thursday, temperatures will have climbed to the mid-80s to low-90s, with humidity making it feel slightly warmer. National Weather Service forecasters set down a Heat Advisory beginning at 11 a.m. Thursday.
“Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke if precautions are not taken,” the advisory warns.
It is Friday when temperatures could warm to a dangerous level, according to the weather service.
High temperatures will rise several degrees from Thursday, with heat indices, or “feels-like” temperatures, hitting 95 to 103.
Friday could also bring showers and thunderstorms, with additional moisture in the air and an approaching cold front. Forecasters put the chances of severe storms around 30%.
The chances for strong to severe storms will depend on the timing of that front, forecasters said.
Temperatures trend cooler behind the front, with temperatures in the low 80s over the weekend. Some showers and storms are possible during the weekend, with the highest chance of precipitation coming later Sunday into Monday.
