Parts of New England could see 4-7 inches of snow Monday

New England’s first winter weather advisory of the season was issued for Monday as snow began falling in northern Maine.

“Closing in on our first inch of snow this season,” Meteorologist James Sinko wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, showing the snow.

The winter weather advisory was issued for Maine in Churchill Dam, Mount Katahdin, Greenville, Madawaska, Monson, Baxter St Park, Frenchville, Baker Lake, Fort Kent, Blanchard, Billy-Jack Depot, Clayton Lake, Allagash and Chamberlain Lake. It’s in effect until 4 p.m. Monday.

The National Weather Service expects these areas to get around four to seven inches of snow.

Earlier in October, the first measurable snow of the New England season fell at 6,288 feet, the tallest point anywhere northeast of North Carolina.

Mount Washington had 0.3 inches of snow on Oct. 8. The Mount Washington Observatory shared photos of the snow covering the house and sign.

Mount Washington has been dubbed the “home of the world’s worst weather,” and it has the data to back it up. In 1934, researchers measured a windspeed of 231 miles per hour, one of the strongest ever record on this planet. The summit sees hurricane-force winds more than 100 days each year and averages about 100 inches of precipitation annually. Snow can last at the peak year round.

There is also a live stream for people to enjoy the beautiful views from the comfort of their warm homes. It also was covered in snow Monday.

In Massachusetts, no snow was expected Monday. Instead, it’ll be rainy.

The forecast for Oct. 30 calls for periods of light to moderate rain that will last throughout the morning and afternoon before tapering off by the evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Once this clears, much drier, yet cooler weather is in store of Halloween. The forecast for Tuesday calls for sunny skies but with temperatures about 10 degrees cooler than normal, the weather service said.

Although Massachusetts isn’t getting snow yet, residents can still expect a snowy season.

AccuWeather released its U.S. winter forecast for the 2023-2024 season Wednesday detailing the possibility of a lot of snow across the commonwealth starting in November.

Last year, Boston had about 12 inches of snow. This year, forecasters predict the city could get as much as 44 inches of snow. Although, that’s still below the average for the city, which is about 49 inches, AccuWeather said.

“Get your snow shovels ready,” AccuWeather warned.
