Opening Day ceremony both special and reminder of what Red Sox are missing | Vautour

BOSTON — That wasn’t the Red Sox Opening Day ceremony that I was expecting.

When I heard that the Red Sox were honoring the 20th anniversary of the 2004 World Series Champions, I thought — and I suspect a lot of people did too — it would resemble so many other pregame events prior to previous home openers. Each guy would be introduced by Dave O’Brien or Joe Castiglione, as they emerged from either the dugout or under the giant banners hanging on the left field wall. Ovations of varying sizes would follow each player announcement while highlight videos airing on the scoreboard screens. Maybe some fireworks. Probably a flyover. Lots of nostalgia.
