Massive East Boston fire sends 5 to hospital

A massive, six-alarm fire broke out in East Boston on Tuesday morning, filling the neighborhood with smoke as visible flames shot out of a large multi-family building on Meridian Street, and sending five people to the hospital.

WCVB-TV reported that Boston EMS took five people to area hospitals. The department could not immediately be reached by MassLive to confirm the news.

Heavy fire broke out in one building on Meridian Street around 5 a.m. Tuesday, and jumped to adjacent buildings, prompting the large response from Boston firefighters, according to the department’s official page on X, formerly Twitter.

“The close proximity of the houses has caused the fire to spread to the house next door and to the building in the rear,” the department wrote.

Videos posted by the department showed firefighters battling the fire from nearby buildings, as they tried to prevent it from consuming an entire city block.

It was not immediately clear Tuesday morning what the cause of the fire was.
