Mass. weather: Countdown begins for snowy New Year’s Eve

It looks like Massachusetts will be ringing in the new year with snow, as the National Weather Service forecasts snowfall across the state Wednesday night, with harsher weather on Cape Cod & the Islands.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Barnstable County from 7 p.m. Wednesday to 1 p.m. Thursday, as snow could make for dangerous travel conditions. The forecast calls for 2 to 4 inches of snow, with the heaviest snowfall between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. Thursday.

Boston will see a high temperature of 32 degrees on Wednesday, with nighttime temps in the mid 20s and snow beginning to fall before midnight. Snow should continue through the night, peaking around 3 a.m. with additional scattered snowfall possible into Thursday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. The forecast calls for about an inch of accumulation in the eastern part of the state.

In Western Massachusetts, Wednesday afternoon temperatures in the Berkshires will top out in the low 20s before settling in the mid-teens overnight. Light snow could begin as early as 8 p.m. and pick up in the early morning hours before petering out around 8 a.m. Thursday.

The National Weather Service forecast calls for a 90% chance of snow in Springfield, beginning around 9 p.m. and bringing 1 to 3 inches of accumulation.

Temperatures will get up to 28 degrees in Worcester on Wednesday, with snow beginning before midnight and peaking between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. The National Weather Service expects 1 to 3 inches in Central Massachusetts.

The new year will bring cold temperatures across the state, with Thursday night lows in single digits in the central and western parts of the state, including wind chill values that are expected to drop below zero on Thursday night. In the Berkshires, the wind chill value is forecast to reach -13.
