Bruins’ comeback falls short in Vegas

A rough second period left the Bruins in a hole too big to climb out of in Las Vegas.

Boston gave up the first two goals of the middle period and a bad shorthanded goal late and fell to the Golden Knights, 6-5, on Thursday at T-Mobile Arena.

The loss was the second straight for the Bruins, who are at Colorado on Saturday.

The Bruins took two leads and surrendered them quickly in the first. The Golden Knights tied the game within two minutes of both Tanner Jeannot’s goal that made it 1-0 and Nikita Zadorov’s tally that made it 2-1.

Vegas scored the first two goals of the second period, including the first power play goal that Boston has surrendered this year, to give the Golden Knights a 4-2 lead.

After David Pastrnak fired a power play wrist shot through traffic to make it 4-3, the Bruins killed off a long 5-on-3 that overlapped with Pavel Zacha’s high-sticking double minor.

That extended penalty kill seemed to give Boston some momentum that they carried into a late power play.

But Casey Mittelstadt tried to force a pass to Pastrnak that everyone saw coming. It led to a shorthanded break and an easy goal for William Karlsson that made it 5-3.

Karlsson scored again on the power play early in the third to make it 6-3.

But the Bruins keep coming. Mark Kastelic and Mikey Eyssimont scored 1:12 apart to cut Boston’s deficit to 6-5 with 14:48 left.

Jeremy Swayman finished with 31 saves.
