As Patriots fizzle, coaches are taking the blame: ‘players win games, coaches lose them’

New England Patriots cornerbacks coach Mike Pellegrino had a curious response when asked about J.C. Jackson’s performance against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Pellegrino said Jackson “did a great job for the most part.”

That may seem like a criticism of Jackson at first. However, Pellegrino followed up by saying that anything that one of his players does wrong is squarely on him.

“If it looks like it’s on him, it’s probably on me. That’s kind just how you have to operate as a coach,” Pellegrino said. “Old adage: Players win games, coaches lose them. That’s what it is.”

Coaches taking the blame appeared to be the company line in Foxborough this week.

With the Patriots floundering at 1-5, criticism surrounding the team has hit an all-time high for the Bill Belichick era. In the days since Sunday’s loss in Las Vegas, the coaches in New England have made a point to say publicly that they shoulder the blame when the team struggles.

“I mean, we’re always looking to do everything we can to try to put the team in the best position,” Belichick said Monday. “That’s the coach’s job, to put the players in a position where they have a chance to win and we’ll do all we can do to that.”

On Tuesday, offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien was asked about the team’s slow starts out of the gate in nearly every game this season. Like the rest of the staff this week, O’Brien made a point to stress that the coaches are as responsible for fixing the issues as players are.

“It’s not good to start the game with two penalties. It’s ridiculous,” O’Brien said. “That falls on me. That falls on them. I know I say every week, we’re in it together.”

The Patriots’ disastrous 1-5 start can be attributed to any number of factors: injuries, turnovers, lack of player development, coming up short in close games.

The team is still looking for answers as it tries to turn things around in 2023. Right now, it looks like the answer publicly is that the coaching staff needs to get its act together in order to put players in a position to succeed.

“If there’s a mistake that shows up, obviously I made that mistake,” Pellegrino said. “Whether it’s review, in the gameplan or just preparation throughout the week. Those are usually, most of the time, 100% on me.”
