Why did a Patriots player walk out of practice? Bill Belichick has predictable response

Bill Belichick was a man of few words Monday in response to two of the most eventful storylines so far in New England Patriots training camp.

There’s the situation with Jack Jones, the second-year cornerback who was arrested over the offseason at Logan Airport.

In addition to Jones’ off-field issues, there was also an incident where the cornerback was seen walking off the field during a practice last week — with no explanation as to why.

Speaking to media for the first time since the incident, Belichick was asked: Was it a discipline thing? Did he take himself out?

Predictably, Belichick offered little insight into the situation, brushing off and deflecting the question.

“No, we’re just working through practice day by day. I think Mike (Pellegrino) talked about it. I don’t have anything to add,” Belichick said.

There’s also the Matthew Judon situation. The Patriots appear to have resolved his contract dispute, which had led to him “holding in” while he angled for a new deal.

So, how does Belichick feel about locking up Judon?

“I’m not gonna get into any contract comp talks before, during or after,” he said.

Sure. But it’s good to have a deal in place, right?

“Yeah, any time we sign a contract, we’re happy with it, they’re happy with it and it’s done,” Belichick said.

The Patriots are back on the practice field Monday as they take part in a fully padded practice that will also feature officials brought in to make calls on the practice field.

The Patriots will practice Monday and Tuesday ahead of their preseason opener against the Houston Texans on Sunday.
