Patriots tried to bring back an All-Pro via trade, but were outbid (report)

The New England Patriots reportedly tried to make a Stephon Gilmore reunion tour happen. But as fans can tell by now, it didn’t work.

The Athletic’s Jeff Howe reports that the Patriots were among the two teams looking to acquire the star cornerback in a trade this offseason. The other team was the Dallas Cowboys, who eventually completed a trade to land the 2018 Defensive Player of the Year.

Gilmore had been playing for the Indianapolis Colts after signing a two-year deal there in 2022. He told The Athletic that the two sides mutually agreed to part ways, with the veteran cornerback looking to avoid participating in a rebuild

Meanwhile, Gilmore said that he ended up landing in at his preferred destination.

“I was really excited,” Gilmore said to The Athletic. “This was one of the places I wanted to come, probably my No. 1 place, so I’m happy we got it done.”

The Cowboys mark 32-year-old Gilmore’s fourth different team in the last four seasons. After a dominant four-year run in New England, Gilmore was traded to the Carolina Panthers following a dispute with the Patriots regarding the handling of both his injury situation and his contract.

Gilmore started 16 games with the Colts last season, recording 2 interceptions and 11 pass breakups.
