A 70-year-old woman killed in a deadly fire at the Gabriel House assisted living facility in Fall River earlier this month was remembered in her obituary as a “beacon of resilience and tenacity.”
Halina Lawler was one of 10 people killed in the fire, which broke out on July 13 in a second-story room at the facility. The fire was the deadliest in Massachusetts in decades.
Lawler was born in a displaced persons camp in Sussex, England on Sept. 12, 1954. The following year, her family emigrated to Brooklyn, New York, and in 1978, Lawler relocated again, to Massachusetts, where she would spend the rest of her life.
“A beacon of resilience and tenacity, her life story is an unforgettable testament to the power of hope and the human spirit,” her obituary reads. “Amidst the challenges she faced, Halina embodied the spirit of resilience, constantly seeking to transform each setback into a setup for a comeback.”
Funeral services for Lawler are entrusted to Southcoast Funeral Homes.
