The regular season has drawn to a close and the postseason is already well underway, with the start of the Western Mass. quarterfinals on Wednesday.
For the first time since the WMass tournament format changed in 2021, all 16 quarterfinal games went to chalk as the higher seeds proved their rank. But on the eve of the WMass semifinals commencing, the respective defending WMass champions — Westfield, Greenfield and Turners Falls — prepare to fend off a horde of hungry challengers ready to crown a new champion.
The Bombers enter the Class A semifinals as favorites to earn a fifth-consecutive WMass title, having previously defeated each of the remaining semifinalists earlier in the regular season.
Last year’s finalists, East Longmeadow, will hope to end this streak, but will need to settle the score first with Agawam, having split its two games in the regular season with Agawam.
Greenfield enter the Class C semifinals aiming to clinch a fourth-consecutive WMass title. The Green Wave have strong competition on the other side of the bracket, with unbeaten Lenox and last year’s finalists Franklin County Tech set to square off.
Turners Falls enters the Class D semifinals as favorites to secure a third-consecutive WMass Title. With the offensive firepower of Hoosac Valley — with 248 runs scored in just 17 games — the Hurricanes have what it takes to challenge the Thunder, but will need to get through Hopkins Academy first, a side that will certainly back itself having previously defeated Turners Falls on Apr. 14.
With South Hadley knocking out last year’s Class B champions, Pittsfield, in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, a new team is guaranteed to lift the trophy this year. Hampshire enter the semifinals as favorites to reclaim glory, having fell to the Generals in last year’s final.
Frontier and South Hadley are set to face off on the other side of the bracket. The Red Hawks nearly defeated the Raiders back on Mar. 28, while the Tigers hope to ride the momentum of their quarterfinal win and get revenge on Frontier, having lost to the Red Hawks on Monday.
