Rising Red Sox prospect records for Double-A hit after early promotion

Red Sox prospect Zach Ehrhard recorded his first Double-A hit Wednesday.

The 22-year-old outfielder led off the bottom of the first with a single to center field in Portland’s 3-1 loss to Reading.

The Sea Dogs lost both games of their doubleheader to Reading.

Ehrhard, a right-handed hitter, received a promotion from High-A Greenville at the beginning of the week. The 2024 fourth round pick batted .342 with a .471 on-base percentage, .459 slugging percentage, .930 OPS, one homer, 10 doubles, 22 RBIs, 24 runs, 26 walks, 27 strikeouts and seven steals in 31 games (140 plate appearances) at Greenville.

Other Red Sox minor league notes from Wednesday:

~ Franklin Arias, who Baseball America ranks No. 67 on its Top 100 list, went 4-for-7 with a double, three RBIs and one strikeout in High-A Greenville’s doubleheader split with Bowling Green.

Greenville won the first game 5-2 and lost the second game 3-1.

The 19-year-old shortstop has batted .333 with a .393 on-base percentage, .431 slugging percentage, .824 OPS, two homers, nine doubles, 26 RBIs, 22 runs, 13 walks, 20 strikeouts and five steals in 37 games (168 plate appearances) between Low-A Salem and Greenville.

~ Eduardo Rivera started for Greenville in the first game of the doubleheader and didn’t allow a hit in 4 ⅔ innings. He gave up one unearned run and two walks while striking out nine. The Red Sox signed him last June after the Athletics released him.

He’s still just 21 and has struck out 37 of the 81 batters he has faced (45.7% strikeout percentage).

~ Nelly Taylor homered in Greenville’s Game 1 win. The 22-year-old center fielder is batting .274 with a .380 on-base percentage, .453 slugging percentage, .833 OPS, three homers, eight doubles, two triples, 14 RBIs, 25 runs, 19 walks, 35 strikeouts and 12 steals in 31 games (137 plate appearances).

MassLive ranked him No. 24 on its preseason Top 25 Red Sox prospect list. Baseball America ranks him No. 26 in the organization and selected him as the system’s top defensive outfielder entering 2025.

~ Jhostynxon Garcia went 2-for-5 with a double, run and two strikeouts in Triple-A Worcester’s 7-4 loss to Durham. He’s 3-for-9 (.333) with a double, homer, three RBIs, three runs, one walk and three strikeouts in his first two games for the WooSox.

The Red Sox promoted the 22-year-old from Double-A Portland on Sunday. Baseball America ranks him Boston’s No. 8 prospect.

~ Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer — Boston’s two top prospects — didn’t record a hit Wednesday but they combined for five walks. Anthony had two walks and Mayer had three walks and a run.

Anthony has a .449 on-base percentage and Mayer has a .344 on-base percentage.

What more does Anthony need to do to push the Red Sox to make a call-up decision? Red Sox manager Alex Cora was asked that question Wednesday.
