Why Cowboys star was ‘kind of forced’ into being best friends with Ezekiel Elliott

The relationship between quarterback Dak Prescott and running back Ezekiel Elliott is a special one. The two came into the league together as rookies with the Dallas Cowboys in 2016 and grew into best friends.

Prescott told reporters this week that coming into the league with the now-New England Patriots running back was a “huge” factor in growing their tight relationship. However, there was another less-known factor that made them spend more time together.

“I think probably more so than anything, he didn’t have a license at that time and I had a car,” Prescott said, drawing a laugh. “So I think that kind of forced our relationship to grow.”

That sparked a follow-up question: Wait, Elliott didn’t have a license?

“Yeah, I don’t think so,” Prescott said.

Like, he never had one?

“I don’t know. You’re just asking too much,” Prescott said, laughing. “I had the car. I was driving.”

The reality is that Eliott had some issues with his driver’s license around that time. The former Ohio State running back’s license had been suspended in 2015 for failing to appear in court and pay a fine. He’d been cited for doing 59 MPH in a 55 MPH zone, according to ESPN.

At the time, Elliott didn’t realize his license had been suspended until December of 2015 when he got into a crash on his way to practice after spinning out in wet conditions.

According to the Columbus Dispatch, Elliott claimed that he’d lost his wallet and didn’t have his license with him — and was instead using a passport for ID. Additionally, the outlet reported that Eliiott’s license was expired at the time.

Elliott’s license issues aside, Prescott said that their status on the team made for the perfect environment for a friendship to grow. Elliott (the No. 4 overall pick in 2016) and Prescott (the No. 135 pick) both starred as rookies, with Elliott leading the NFL in rushing and Prescott winning Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.

“It wasn’t about where we got picked,” Prescott said. “Obviously any quarterback, running back coming in the same class, there’s going to naturally bond, being able to learn the offense together, spend time together, get reps together. Then, ultimately, when I got a chance to play, it just made it that much greater.”

Prescott and Elliott are set to face off as opponents for the first time in the NFL when the Patriots visit the Cowboys on Sunday, Oct. 1 for a 4:25 p.m. EST matchup.
