Westfield man charged with rape of 11-year-old while mom was upstairs

WESTFIELD — A city man was in custody at Hampden County Jail last week after being arraigned on charges of rape of a child.

Westfield Police Officer Christopher Coach reported, in a court document, that an 11-year-old girl was interviewed by a multidisciplinary team at the Family Advocacy Center in Springfield and said that she had been raped in her home by Brett Powers, 33, of no fixed address in Westfield.

Coach wrote that the girl told the investigators her mother was upstairs when Powers had intercourse with her and, when her mother came downstairs and found her sleeping naked next to him on the couch, “she woke up to her mother yelling at Mr. Powers.” Her mother had been “yelling at Mr. Powers to get out of the house,” she told the investigators.
