Western Mass. man convicted of 33 charges gets life sentence

A 47-year-old man convicted on 33 criminal charges connected to the rape and abuse of three children over several years was sentenced to life in prison after a Franklin Superior Court Judge deemed him a habitual offender, prosecutors said.

Miguel Rivera, of Greenfield, was found guilty of 22 counts of rape and indecent assault and battery, as well as multiple counts of assault and battery and witness intimidation after a 10-day trial, Northwestern District Attorney David E. Sullivan’s office said in a statement. Rivera’s abuse of two victims stretched from 2016 to 2020 in various locations in Franklin County, while his abuse of a third occurred in 2020.

A jury convicted Rivera on the 33 charges on March 4. During a separate trial beginning on March 12, Judge Karen Goodwin found Rivera guilty of being a habitual offender, defined as a “person who has previously served two or more separate state prison sentences of at least three years,” according to Sullivan’s office.
