Two new contenders have stormed into the second Western Mass. girls’ lacrosse rankings of the season — No. 5 Agawam and No. 10 Chicopee.
Agawam has surged into the spotlight for all the right reasons.
Under new head coach Taylor DeGeorge, the team has made a remarkable turnaround from last season’s five-win finish. The Brownies have taken command of the Valley Wheel league, racking up 60 goals while surrendering just 29 in their first five games.
The team also doesn’t rely on a single standout but instead showcases a deep roster of contributors. Senior midfielder Isabella Spaulding, in particular, has been on a good run, leading the scoring charge in recent wins over No. 8 Minnechaug and No. 7 Westfield.
Meanwhile, Chicopee has climbed into the rankings with a strong 6-1 record. After an early loss to No. 9 Hoosac Valley, the Pacers have caught fire, rattling off five straight wins.
Their success is driven by a young and talented core, including sophomore midfielder and leading scorer Cassidy Pytel (23 goals, 5 assists), and freshman’s Sophia Moreira (19 goals, 15 assists) and Kiyah Price (19 goals, 12 assists).
As Agawam and Chicopee rise, Mount Greylock (1-5) and South Hadley (2-4) slide out of the top 10, their slow starts costing them spots in the latest rankings.
