Top-ranked Longmeadow stormed out of the gate with a 4-0 start for the second straight season, racking up 52 goals in wins over Central Catholic, Nashoba Regional, No. 3 West Springfield, and Duxbury.
But last Friday, Apr. 11, Longmeadow faced its first real test against Acton-Boxborough (6-2)—and took its first hit.
The Lancers made things interesting with a third-quarter rally, netting seven goals to narrow the gap to just one, 9-8, heading into the final frame. But the comeback fell short in the fourth, as Acton-Boxborough—still carrying the fire from last year’s one-point loss to Needham in the Division I State Semifinals—held strong and sealed the upset.
Longmeadow rebounded on Thursday night with a 16-7 victory over Saint John’s (Shrewsbury), powered by standout efforts from Colin Mulderig (5 goals, 2 assists), Max Zichittella (5 goals), and Myles Chapman (2 goals, 5 assists).
Minnechaug climbs into the No. 2 spot, riding a perfect 5-0 start to the season. The Falcons soared to their fifth straight win on Monday, Apr. 14, defeating Wahconah and continuing a dominant run that’s seen them outscore opponents 73-11 across five games.
But the Falcons aren’t the only ones flying high.
No. 7 Northampton and No. 10 Hoosac Valley remain the only other undefeated teams three weeks into the season.
Northampton, in particular, made a statement with a milestone win over Amherst—its first victory against the Hurricanes since 2019. With the win, the Blue Devils improved to 5-0, firmly cementing their place atop the Pioneer League.
No. 3 West Springfield, despite stumbling early with losses to No. 5 East Longmeadow and Longmeadow, has since found its rhythm.
Since Apr. 2, the Terriers have strung together four straight wins, including a statement victory over No. 4 Agawam, along with strong showings against Wahconah, No. 9 South Hadley, and Lenox.
In the win over Agawam, the Terriers showed off their depth, with nine different players contributing on the scoresheet—led by hat tricks from Nate Stone and Cam Giang.
On the flip side, Wahconah becomes the first team to drop from the rankings this season.
Taking its place is No. 8 Amherst, making a much stronger impression this spring compared to last year’s winless 0-5 start.
The Hurricanes come in hot with a 4-2 record and quality wins over Westfield, Lenox, South Hadley, and Pope Francis.
