West Nile virus has been detected in a mosquito collected from a trap in Worcester, the city announced Friday afternoon.
As a result of this discovery, the Central Massachusetts Mosquito Control Project (CMMCP) will be spraying pesticides from trucks on Tuesday, Aug. 26 after 9 p.m. where the insects with West Nile virus were found, according to city spokesperson Thomas Matthews.
The following areas will be sprayed:
- Brookfield Street
- Concord Street
- East Boundary Avenue
- Faraday Street
- Grove Street
- Humboldt Avenue
- Lancaster Street
- Lancaster Terrace
- Lexington Street
- Magnolia Avenue
- Milton Street
- North East Avenue
- North Street
- Powers Court
- Prescott Street
- Rumford Avenue
- Rural Drive
- Sagamore Road
- Salisbury Street
- South Boundary Avenue
- South East Avenue
- Tuckerman Street
- Upper Avenue
- West Boundary Avenue
- West Circular Avenue
There are currently no human cases of West Nile virus reported and the city’s risk level remains low, according to Matthews.
Additionally, personnel from CMMCP are planning to be in Worcester on Sept. 2 to respond to mosquito-related concerns from residents, Matthews said.
West Nile virus is a disease that spreads through mosquito bites. Most people who are infected with the virus don’t experience symptoms, but one in five can develop fever, headache, body aches and other flu-like symptoms, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
It is rare, but West Nile virus can also affect the nervous system, resulting in serious inflammation of the brain or spinal cord.
