ANN ARBOR, Mich. — A 12-year-old is in custody after stealing a forklift from a middle school, the Ann Arbor Police Department said.

On Nov. 25 around 6:45 p.m., officers received a report of the child attempting to steal the forklift. A few minutes later, officers located the stolen forklift driving on a nearby road.

Multiple officers initiated a pursuit of the vehicle at speeds of 15 to 20 mph with emergency lights and sirens on, police said. During the pursuit, the forklift struck 10 parked vehicles.

Around 7:18 p.m., officers terminated the pursuit when the forklift drove across a bridge. At that time, deputies with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office picked up the pursuit and followed the forklift until the 12-year-old boy stopped at 7:53 p.m.

The boy was taken into custody and later lodged at the juvenile detention center.
