MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis police officer received an unexpected assist during a foot pursuit when a passing driver offered a lift, a moment that was captured on video and has since gone viral on social media, WMC reported.
The driver, amused by the scene, began filming as he picked up the winded officer who was in pursuit of a suspect wanted on multiple felony property theft charges. In the video posted to Facebook, the officer is seen hopping into the back seat, catching his breath before leaping back out to rejoin the pursuit alongside another officer.
Despite the civilian’s help, Memphis Police say the suspect ultimately escaped. However, the footage has drawn widespread attention online and earned praise for the citizen’s actions.
“These officers are getting tired,” the driver says in the video as officers are seen struggling to keep up with the fleeing suspect.
Memphis Police confirmed the pursuit and said the officer’s decision to accept a ride did not violate any department policies. In a statement, the department thanked the civilian for his assistance.
“We extend our sincere thanks to the citizen who assisted during this pursuit,” MPD posted. “Their actions exemplify the strong community partnership we value and strive to foster at the Memphis Police Department.”
