Trent Brown helping Patriots rookie who is ‘doing a lot better’

Sidy Sow hadn’t played tackle since his freshman year at Eastern Michigan in 2018, but in his first training camp with the Patriots, he’s been repping at right tackle in Mac Jones’ offense.

Injuries have led to changes across the unit, but anchoring an end opposite Trent Brown, the fourth-round pick is still getting a look over veterans Conor McDermott and Riley Reiff, who has recently kicked inside to guard. From where Brown is standing, Sow’s growth has been substantial during his time in Foxborough.

“Sidy is an athletic guy. I think he’s made leaps and bounds these last couple weeks,” Brown said. “I’ve been working with him extra, trying to make sure he’s on point. And you guys see: I think he’s doing a lot better. We’ll see again when we go check the film out.”

Sow is not the only rookie repping in Jones’ group, as fifth-rounder Atonio Mafi has been in Cole Strange’s place as the guard works his way back from a knee injury.

“Mafi is a mature guy,” Brown said. “He came in, I think he’s ready to play ball. He takes coaching well and he takes to the group well.”

It’s been a turbulent start to camp for the offensive line as a whole, but Brown believes they’ll have things on track by the time Week 1 rolls around.

“I have confidence in every guy in our room,” Brown said. “None of us would be here if they didn’t believe in us to get the job done.”

It’ll be fascinating to see what the alignment is when the Eagles arrive in Foxborough in less than a month for the season opener. A lot hinges on Michael Onwenu, who remains on the PUP list following offseason ankle surgery, but traveled to Green Bay to joint practices. Calvin Anderson is a wild card, too, as the tackle remains on the non-football illness list.
