Top Red Sox prospect reaches 98.6 mph in 5 scoreless innings for WooSox

Top Red Sox pitching prospect Payton Tolle reached 98.6 mph with his fastball in a dominant start for Triple-A Worcester on Saturday.

He earned the win in the WooSox’ 9-5 victory over the Iowa Cubs in Des Moines.

The 22-year-old lefty pitched 5 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out five. It was his second Triple-A start. He has pitched nine straight scoreless innings after he allowed six runs in the first inning of his WooSox debut.

Tolle’s 29 four-seam fastballs, averaging 96.0 mph and inducing four swings and misses with it.

The Red Sox drafted the 6-foot-7, 270-pounder in the second round (50th overall) out of TCU in 2024. He began the season in High-A Greenville, then received a promotion to Double-A Portland on June 24. Boston promoted him to Worcester on Aug. 6. Baseball America ranks him No. 41 on its Top 100 prospect list.

He has a 3.12 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 124 strikeouts and 23 walks in 19 outings (17 starts) combined between the three levels in 2025.
