The Boston Red Sox will get their first look at MLB’s No. 8 prospect when the Orioles come to Fenway Park for a two-game series beginning Monday night.
Baltimore called up catcher/first baseman Samuel Basallo on Sunday prior to its finale against the Houston Astros. He’ll serve as the Orioles designated hitter.
Basallo slashed .270/.377/.589 with 23 home runs and 67 RBI in 76 games for Triple-A Norfolk. The 2021 international signee showed off his versatility in Triple-A with 33 games at catcher, 20 at first base and 20 at DH.
“It’s crazy. I don’t know if I’ve seen anyone hit like that ever. He’s really good at hitting,” Orioles’ No. 3 prospect Dylan Beavers told reporters of Basallo, via MLB.com. “What you see is what I see,” Beavers said Saturday afternoon. “Hopefully, we’ll see him soon. He’s really good, so he belongs here.”
With the Orioles at the bottom of the American League East standings with a 56-67 record going into Sunday’s game, they’ll likely be able to utilize Basallo’s versatility for the remainder of the season.
