Top Red Sox prospect Marcelo Mayer has huge game for Portland

Top Red Sox prospect Marcelo Mayer reached base four times, including belting a home run in Double-A Portland’s 7-4 win over Hartford.

He also singled twice, walked, scored three runs and struck out once. He did have a throwing error.

Mayer, a 21-year-old shortstop who Boston selected fourth overall in the 2021 draft, is 19-for-60 (.317) with a .344 on-base percentage, .500 slugging percentage, .844 OPS, two home runs, five doubles, 11 runs, eight RBIs, three walks, 16 strikeouts and two steals in 14 games for Portland so far.

Baseball America ranks him No. 21 on its Top 100 list. Boston drafted him fourth overall in 2021. MassLive ranks him the No. 2 prospect on its Top 25 Red Sox prospect list behind Roman Anthony.

Mayer’s numbers suffered after a promotion to Portland last year. But his slump also coincided with a shoulder injury he suffered May 7 at High-A Greenville. He was placed on the injured list (shoulder inflammation) Aug. 5 and the Red Sox eventually decided in early September to shut him down.

“The injury to the shoulder should not temper this future five-tool All-Star potential shortstop’s path to the major leagues where his skills and intangibles will enable above-average impact on both sides of the ball,” an MLB scout told MassLive in February. “Mental makeup, intangibles on both sides of the ball should play some in the core of a lineup as a middle infield talent. Contact. Power projection. His speed will excite on top of plus shortstop defense. Very poised with feel, drive and passion.”
