Tom Brady is confident that Drake Maye has the right developmental team around him in New England — especially with Josh McDaniels as the offensive coordinator.
“I think he’s got great development being in that program. And just working with Josh McDaniels for as long as I did, he knows how to develop quarterbacks,” the former Patriots quarterback said on FOX on Sunday. “He’s so good with getting guys in the right play.”
Brady also couldn’t help but take a shot at his former teammate Rob Gronkowski, who was sitting next to him on the FOX studio desk.
“And right now, Drake May is playing with the greatest tight end in the history of the New England Patriots, Hunter Henry,” Brady said.
Jokes aside, Brady’s success with McDaniels speaks for itself. McDaniels helped develop Brady at the beginning of his career that spanned over two decades.
The duo won two Super Bowls — Super Bowl XXXIX in 2004 and Super Bowl XLIX in 2014 — and were a consistent playoff team. Brady won six Super Bowls in total while with the Patriots before winning his seventh with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In his second season in New England, Maye has improved every week with McDaniels as the Patriots offensive coordinator. Through their first four games, the 23-year-old ranks among the NFL league leaders in all positive passing categories.
While Maye’s rookie season ended with a 4-13 record, the quarterback continued to improve with each passing week despite the outcome of each game.
Now with a new coach in Mike Vrabel and McDaniels in his third stint with New England — his first with Maye — Maye continues to grow as a player.
“I think any good player I’ve ever been around has followed that simple blueprint of taking each day for what it is, not making more of it or less of it than the next one, and he sticks to that plan,” McDaniels said. “Mistakes don’t get him down. He doesn’t get too high when he makes a great play, which I think is a great mindset for a young player to have, too. There’s not a whole lot that surprises me about the kid. I’m just excited to continue to watch his development.”
