Stefon Diggs has been active and practicing for most of training camp. But will he actually play for the New England Patriots in Week 1?
That was the question posed by Dianna Russini on the Scoop City podcast. Diggs’ response? It was pretty cryptic.
“I feel great. I’m pushing the needle always. I’m always doing more than less. We’ll see about Week 1,” Diggs said. “I don’t know how I feel about it. We’ll see. Coaches aren’t too excited. I’m not too excited. I’m just trying to take a day by day. So we’ll see. It looks like we just don’t know where it’s gonna go. Yeah, yeah.”
Was Diggs trying to slip a message in there somewhere? Russini wasn’t sure.
“I feel like you’re really trying to tell me something and I’m really bad at reading the signs,” she said.
Diggs is coming off an ACL injury that ended his season with the Houston Texans last year. The former Vikings, Bills and Texans star arrived in New England as a free agent, bringing some much-needed star power to the receiver position.
So far in camp, Diggs has been regularly on the field and has expressed confidence in how his knee has held up. However, he agreed with a point Russini made that he has a tendency to push things rather than play it safe.
As things stand, it’s unclear when Diggs will appear in a game for the Patriots. He sat out last week’s preseason opener. It would be an aggressive move to have him appear in either of the upcoming preseason games as well.
So, Russini asked again, looking for a scoop on Scoop City: Will Diggs play Week 1.
“I don’t know. It’s up in the air right now. You gotta take that up with coach Vrabel,” he said.
Russini didn’t like her chances of getting a clear answer.
The Patriots open up their regular season at home on Sunday, Sept. 7, against the Las Vegas Raiders.
