26-year-old facing charges after police say they ran red light, killed another driver

A 26-year-old Reading resident is facing multiple charges after police said they ran a red light, causing the crash that killed another driver in May.

Nashason Mutugi has been charged with motor vehicle homicide, failure to stop, marked lanes violation and unsafe passing.

Reading police say Mutugi, who driving a 2006 Volvo, was speeding down the street and ran a red light at the intersection of Main Street and Hopkins Street on May 2. The Volvo struck the driver’s side door of a 2014 green Ford Fusion that was traveling eastbound on Hopkins Street.

The Ford spun into traffic on the northbound side of Main Street, colliding with a gray 2014 Audi Q7. The Volvo, meanwhile, slammed into a 2018 gray Toyota RAV4 after the initial collision, police said.

About a dozen 911 calls were made about a collision shortly after 10 p.m. Police responded to the call, the Reading Police Department said in a post to its Facebook page.

The driver of the Fusion was killed.

Mutugi is scheduled to be arraigned in Woburn District Court on Oct. 8.

“It’s vital that we investigate serious incidents thoroughly, especially when a life is lost, in the best interests of justice,” Reading Police Chief David Clark said. “Thank you to our community for its patience.”
