Springfield man accused by police of forcibly raping a child ordered held without bail

WESTFIELD — A Hampden County assistant district attorney announced Monday during a bail hearing in Westfield District Court that a Springfield man who was accused by police in September of forcibly raping a child was indicted by a Hampden Superior Court grand jury on charges related to the assault.

The announcement was made by Hampden County Assistant District Attorney Joseph McCoy during the hearing requested by Stephanie Woods, the attorney representing Coren Tremaine Boyd, 19, of Lebanon Place, Springfield, who was charged with forcible rape of a child, indecent assault and battery on a person under 14, threat to commit a crime and witness intimidation.

The bail hearing was held because he was scheduled for release on Monday after being held without bail at the Hampden County House of Correction since his arrest in September.

Woods, knowing that Boyd was scheduled to be arraigned in Hampden County Superior Court on Feb. 12 and would most likely be found to be a danger to the public once again and held without bail, was asking the court to release him until his arraignment next week.

The commonwealth was seeking to have Boyd remain in jail without bail.

Woods said Boyd was willing to meet any condition the court would require if he was released for the nine days, including wearing GPS tracker, being under house arrest, posting bail of up to $4,000, refraining from using drugs or drinking alcohol, and he was even willing to wear a SCRAM CAM, which continuously monitors alcohol consumption.

District Court Judge Janine Simonian was unfamiliar with the case and spent several minutes looking over the details of the sexual assault that led to Boyd’s arrest, which had been briefly summarized by McCoy during the hearing.

Simonian ordered Boyd held until Feb. 13, citing the violence involved in the alleged rape, charges in other cases he had been facing and his juvenile record.

Last March, Boyd, then 18, and another man were charged with armed carjacking, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of a property damage crash and receiving a stolen vehicle, according to a media report.

Woods said those charges had been dismissed, which McCoy acknowledged.

Boyd’s arrest for the alleged sex crime began last September after the victim’s grandfather contacted the police about the alleged assault, according to a statement of facts prepared by the investigating officer.

The grandfather told police his granddaughter told him that the night before — Sept. 13 — Boyd had sexually assaulted her in the parking lot of the YMCA on Court Street, according to the police report.

When investigators interviewed the victim, now 13, on Thursday, Sept. 18, she said the assault began when Boyd arrived at her home and started texting her to come outside so he could speak to her, according to the report.

After she went outside, Boyd told her to get into his vehicle, she told investigators.

When she said no, he showed her a gun and threatened to kill her if she didn’t get in, she said.

Once inside the vehicle, Boyd drove her to the YMCA and parked, she told investigators.

As the assault began, the victim told him to stop, which prompted him to punch and slap her several times, she told investigators.

Boyd then held her down, took off her clothes, and began raping her, despite the victim pleading with him to stop, she told investigators.

After he finished, he raped her again, she said.

At the interview, the victim said Boyd forced her to have sex numerous times at his home in Springfield.

During those sexual assaults, the victim said Boyd would hit her, and on one occasion, he struck her in the head with a baseball bat, according to the report.

The victim knew Boyd because he was in a relationship with someone she was familiar with. The police report didn’t include that person’s name.

She also told investigators he was wearing a GPS tracking device on his ankle.

Investigators confirmed Boyd was in the parking lot by checking his location with the state Probation Services Electronic Monitoring Unit, according to the report.

There was also video evidence that Boyd was in the parking lot of the YMCA that Saturday night, according to the report.

For that incident, he was charged with forcible rape of a child, indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, threat to commit a crime, and assault and battery on a family or household member, according to court records.
