Snow closures Massachusetts: Why one school district remains shut Wednesday

Days after a snowstorm brought more than 20 inches to multiple Massachusetts cities and towns, only one school remains closed Wednesday.

Middleborough Public Schools has remained closed all week, citing narrow roads and a lack of cleared sidewalks. The town received 17.5 inches of snow Sunday and Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

“At this time, many roads remain narrow due to significant snow accumulation, making it difficult and unsafe for school buses to travel, particularly when vehicles are approaching from the opposite direction. In addition, sidewalks remain unsafe for students due to large snow piles forcing students to walk in the road, and in some areas snow piles are so high that vehicles cannot safely pull out into traffic,” the school district wrote Tuesday around 4 p.m.

The school district said the Department of Public Works was working diligently to address these issues, including widening roads, but that it was not completed.

Still, the school district said athletics would still be taking place on Wednesday. And administrative assistants and staff who are 12-month employees are expected to report to work Wednesday.

On Tuesday, some school districts, including Northampton and Easthampton, were forced to change from a two-hour delay to a full day off due to bus driver shortages. For Sandwich Public Schools, some of the buses weren’t able to start.

Those districts plan to have students return to school Wednesday.
