Six Maryland women are facing charges after breaking into a Norwood home and getting into a car chase with police last week, according to Norwood police.
Mirabela Caldarau, 42, Jajela Chiciu, 41, Flavia Cladararu, 22, Emilia Sardaru, 36, Mihaela Ion, 33, and Elizabeth Sardaru, 21, have been charged with breaking and entering during the daytime to commit a felony, conspiracy to commit a felony, possession of burglarious instruments and resisting arrest, the police department said in a Tuesday press release.
On July 25, officers responded to a home on Neponset Street around 12:30 p.m. for a report of a break-in, police said. At the scene, the residents of the home told them they’d returned home to find the women inside. After being confronted, the women fled in a vehicle that was waiting outside the home, the home’s residents said.
Shortly after, an officer noticed a vehicle matching the victims’ description of the suspect vehicle, police said. The officer tried to pull the vehicle over, but the driver did not stop.
After a brief car chase, the six suspects got out of the vehicle on Dean Street and ran away into a nearby wooded area, police said. The officer chased after one suspect and was able to apprehend her.
Other officers soon responded to the scene and established a perimeter around the area, police said. A plain-clothed officers soon noticed several of the suspects behind a Pleasant Street business, but they fled when he approached them. That officer and another officer chased after them and managed to apprehend two more suspects.
A fourth officer managed to apprehend two more suspects as they tried to flee across a nearby river with the help of a Walpole police detective, police said. The sixth and final suspect was apprehended soon after.
During booking, two of the suspects were found to have obscured or altered fingerprints, making it difficult to identify them, police said. But with the help of Homeland Security Investigations, Norwood police eventually identified all six suspects and discovered that they all had several active warrants from other states in connection with similar crimes.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the suspects are “part of an organized group engaged in similar criminal activity across multiple states,” police said. All six are related to one another and to the two men who were taken into ICE custody.
Norwood police are still investigating the suspects and working with law enforcement agencies in other states to aid their related investigations, police said.
