WORCESTER — When Marcelo Mayer hit the injured list on July 25, the Red Sox had a number of choices in Worcester to take his roster spot. Vaughn Grissom’s hot hitting over the past couple of months positioned him as an option for a promotion.
But the Red Sox went with David Hamilton, who was sent down to Worcester on July 10 after hitting .179 with a .505 OPS, three homers and three doubles in 62 games (133 plate appearances) in his first stint with Boston.
