Red Sox rain delay: Saturday game vs. Orioles at Fenway won’t start on time

Update: The game will start at approximately 5:40 p.m.

BOSTON — The start of the Red Sox and Orioles game Saturday at Fenway Park has been delayed because of severe weather conditions. First pitch was scheduled for 4:10 p.m. A new start time has not yet been announced.

The tarp was placed on the field at approximately 3:40 p.m. It is raining and thundering here.

The Red Sox posted a message on their Jumbotron for fans to take cover in the concourse or under the grandstands because of “severe weather in the area.”

Chris Sale (6-3, 4.46 ERA) will pitch for the Red Sox opposite O’s righty Jack Flaherty (8-8, 4.84 ERA). The Orioles won Friday 11-2 over Boston in the first game of the three-game series.

The National Weather Service’s report on the weather this afternoon in Boston notes, “A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 4pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 86. South wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.”

Wilyer Abreu is in center field for the Red Sox who have just a 2.7% chance of making the postseason, per Fangraphs.

The Red Sox made a roster move Saturday, recalling right-handed pitcher Zack Weiss from Triple-A Worcester. They optioned Brandon Walter to Worcester.
