BOSTON — Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman hit Friday and will take ground balls Saturday, manager Alex Cora said.
This is the beginning of baseball activities for the 31-year-old who has been on the 10-day injured list since May 24 with a right quad strain.
“It’s Week 5. We’ll reassess the situation Week 6 and then from there, we’ll probably have a better idea when he’s going to come back,” Cora said at Fenway Park on Friday.
Bregman batted .299 with a .385 on-base percentage, .553 slugging percentage, .938 OPS, 11 home runs, 17 doubles, 35 RBIs, 32 runs, 22 walks and 42 strikeouts in 51 games (226 plate appearances) before getting hurt. He also recorded five defensive runs saved in 446 ⅔ innings.
“He’s progressing very well,” Cora said. “No timetable yet.”
Despite being out for more than a month, Bregman is a finalist in the AL third basemen All-Star voting.
“I don’t think he’s pushing faster than what he can,” Cora said. “I think he’s pushing because he feels good. So we just have to be patient and be smart about it and whenever he’s ready, he’s ready.”
