FOXBOROUGH – The coach/quarterback dynamic is an important one.
When it comes to Mike Vrabel and Drake Maye, it might be best to describe it as developing.
It’s still a work in progress.
Following Wednesday’s Day 1 practice, Maye provided some insight on the relationship. He talked about how Vrabel has gone about leading his quarterback, but also letting him learn by trial and error.
“He does a great job of giving me points where I can improve, points where, ‘hey, maybe do this,’’’ Maye explained. ”I think he’s also kind of letting me go, kind of seeing where I’m at. And I think it’s kind of a challenge for me to kind of lead this football team and lead this offense.”
In terms of points Vrabel has stressed, Maye’s penchant for giving up on plays, and taking off to run is high on the list.
Maye explained the change he’s been encouraged by Vrabel to make.
“I think just kind of remaining a passer longer when I scramble, I think that’s big,” Maye said. “I’m kind of getting outside the pocket, remaining a passer longer, hoping for some big plays, scramble plays.”
In other words, Maye was too quick to tuck it in and run, as opposed to letting a play develop.
“I feel like I had good times last year where I had some guys deep that I may have missed them or took off running instead,” he said. “So, just trying to remain a passer and just keep trying to work on footwork.”
