Patriots get WR back at practice, missing 2 others

FOXBOROUGH — It was a mixed bag for the Patriots as they took the field for a rare Tuesday practice at Gillette Stadium.

After almost two months on the shelf, speedy wideout Tyquan Thornton was back in action.

Thornton suffered a shoulder injury at a joint practice in Green Bay on Aug. 17, and began the year on injured reserve for the second straight season. The Patriots now have 21 days to add him to the active roster, which might be necessary soon, because New England was missing two other wide receivers.

Demario Douglas and JuJu Smith-Schuster are both in the concussion protocol after suffering head injuries in Sunday’s loss to the Saints; neither was present at Tuesday’s practice. Starting guard Mike Onwenu was also missing after leaving Sunday’s game with an ankle injury. That’ll be one to monitor moving forward, as Onwenu underwent ankle surgery this offseason.

The only other player absent from the active roster was Matthew Judon, who will likely land on injured reserve eventually when the Patriots need a roster spot. Cody Davis (PUP) and Trey Flowers (PUP) were still present as the tandem begins its second week of practice with their 21-day clock ticking.

During the media window at practice, Cole Strange (ankle) and Riley Reiff (knee) both appeared limited, and more shuffling could be coming to an embattled offensive line. There won’t be an injury report Tuesday though, as the first of the week doesn’t come out until Wednesday.
