Massachusetts is set to see some much-needed rain amid an ongoing drought, with showers beginning Wednesday morning and continuing throughout much of the day.
Widespread showers and embedded thunderstorms are set to move east before daybreak, with a weak cold front stalling just south of the coast as high pressure builds from the south. That will lead to a cloudy and cooler day across Massachusetts, with scattered showers continuing.
“Can’t rule out an isolated thunderstorm this afternoon,” National Weather Service forecasters wrote.
Temperatures should stay relatively cool on Wednesday, with highs in the mid to upper 60s or low 70s.
By the evening, there is a chance for a lull in the rain, but more showers are set to develop late Wednesday night, moving in from the west into Thursday night.
“It appears the window for most active weather will be Thu into Thu evening, then cold front moves into the region overnight with somewhat drier air moving in from the west,” forecasters wrote.
The rain is expected to be most concentrated in Western Massachusetts, with the chance for Springfield and Greenfield to see up to 2 inches of rain. In the eastern part of the state, the rain should be less significant, particularly along the coast, where up to 1 inch could fall.
Some weather models show a chance for even more rain, up to 3 inches, forecasters noted.
“If these higher amounts are realized, there could be some minor street flooding in urban and poor drainage areas,” forecasters wrote.
Temperatures should warm up on Thursday to the lower 70s, with dewpoints climbing well into the 60s, creating humid conditions for much of the state.
The weather pattern remains unsettled on Friday, with a few showers possible but any significant rain unlikely. There is a chance for some additional showers Saturday night into Sunday, but the weekend should largely be dry.
“Early next week will have to monitor the tropics as [models] show a potential tropical system approaching from the south,” forecasters wrote.
