Old demolition order complicating Westfield ice cream shop’s picnic area plans

WESTFIELD — Mrs. C’s Ice Cream Soft Serve & Cafe just opened this summer, but this week the Conservation Commission was discussing an order to demolish the building.

Fortunately for aficionados of frozen treats, it’s an old, uncompleted demolition project that the property owner had filed in 2018 but now doesn’t want to pursue. Commission members said the permit still needs to be closed properly, however.

Fred Laguerica, whose family owns the properties at 192 and 196 E. Main St., Westfield, requested and was permitted in 2018 to demolish two houses being used by squatters and the building that now houses Mrs. C’s, and replace them both with a retail facility. The houses were torn down in 2019, but the project was halted by Laguercia’s death and the start of COVID-19.
