FONTANA, Calif. — An off-duty San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputy killed a suspected gunman who fatally injured a man and woman in Fontana on Saturday night, June 21, police said.

The shootings occurred around 9:30 p.m. in the 15200 block of Summit Avenue, east of the 15 Freeway, according to a Fontana Police Department statement.

A 45-year-old man opened fire on a 43-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman, injuring both of them, according to the police statement.

An off-duty deputy witnessed the gunfire and shot and killed the gunman, the police statement added.

The suspected gunman was pronounced dead at the scene, police said, while the man and woman he is accused of shooting later died at the hospital.

There was no indication that the off-duty deputy was injured.

Authorities have not released the names of the deputy, the gunman or the two gunshot victims.

Police have also not identified a suspected motive for the initial shooting or outlined what happened prior to the outbreak of gunfire.

That block of Summit Avenue includes a shopping center with several fast-food restaurants, retail stores and banks. It wasn’t immediately clear if the shootings were tied to an incident at any specific business.
