Nick Saban thinks Bill Belichick has what it takes to be a college football coach.
“Bill’s an outstanding coach,” Saban said during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.” “He’s very well organized. He’s a good teacher. I think he relates well with the players. I think he would do a great job in college.”
Belichick reportedly interviewed for the coaching vacancy at North Carolina. It’s viewed as the top open job, though sources told MassLive’s Karen Guregian that the interest from Belichick and UNC “may only be cosmetic at this point.”

Belichick’s success as an NFL coach speaks for itself. He was shut out of the 2024 coaching cycle after parting ways with the New England Patriots earlier this year. The 72-year-old has never coached at the college level. And while there are differences between the NFL and college — particularly recruiting — Saban said that part of the process isn’t as important as it once was due to NIL.
“I think it becomes a little bit more about the money, and the deal that you make with them,” Saban said. “So, it is a little bit more like pro football.”
Tom Brady said on Sunday that he couldn’t see his former coach on the college sidelines and pointed to the recruiting as a big reason why.
“Could you imagine him recruiting?,” Brady said during FOX’s NFL pregame coverage. “‘Do you really want to come here? We don’t really want you anyway.’”
Even though he’s not coaching in 2024, Belichick has been busy with several media gigs including co-hosting the “Let’s Go!” podcast, appearing weekly on “The Pat McAfee Show” and having his own show.
Belichick is 15 wins away from breaking Don Shula’s record of most wins by an NFL coach, and according to reports Belichick wants the record to be his.
